RED DIRT TRACKS

RED DIRT TRACKS

From Barngarla Country Port Lincoln in SA, Wilyakali Country Broken Hill in Western NSW to Rinyirru Country in Cape York, Far North QLD, our travels have taken us along many red dirt tracks…

The songs we have written are reflections from our journeys over the last few years, slowly collected and woven together for this album ….

RED DIRT TRACKS

Thanks to our long time friend Mark Smith of Real Productions for capturing the sounds with the studio set up so that we played live and acoustically, just as we have played around many campsites writing these songs and for skilfully mixing and mastering the album.

We are incredibly grateful to Dave Steel for taking the time to listen to our songs, give some much appreciated feedback AND a killer piece of subtle and beautiful slide guitar work on ‘Red Dirt, Salt Bush and Daisies’.

The cover art for RED DIRT TRACKS was stitched by Tina and inside cover photographed by Warwick.

Thank you to Jeremy Fullerton for expertly photographing the artwork and to

Libby Scharf for her wonderful graphics tying the whole album together!

Big love and thanks to all of our family and friends, all of you who have helped

and inspired us to keep going on this amazing journey….

We dedicate this album to the memories of Ros, and Linda, our beautiful friends and fellow travellers and to the one whose spirit shares the red dirt plains of Wilyakali Country.

We hope you enjoy the journey along some RED DIRT TRACKS

song notes….

1. ULYSSES

Ulysses was written at the beautiful Murray Falls, just North of Cardwell in Queensland. During early morning practice sessions, I was regularly visited by an amazing array of butterflies, including the magical Ulysses. This piece was composed while watching the beautiful morning dance of these butterflies….

2. ONE MORE CHANCE

The statistics, for women in particular, of domestic violence is a subject we all need to understand in order to change. In this song we touch on this topic and what it takes for someone to leave a troubled home and memories behind.

3. WE ALL BELONG

A song about not fitting in to a society which is increasingly leaving the disadvantaged behind and shaking up the system.

4. RED DIRT, SALT BUSH AND DAISIES

Written to honour the adventurous spirit of a woman who had passed away alone in her travelling home, at a roadside rest stop outside of Broken Hill not long before we pulled in.

5. HANUSH’S WATERHOLE

Is a journey to an ancient waterhole on the Normanby River in Rinyirru National Park, Cape York, Queensland

6. MOVEMENT IN THE DARKNESS

Movement in the Darkness is a song about getting old, about sleepless nights waiting for the sunrise…Looking back at regretful decisions and wondering, what if? In the end there’s always something or someone that gives us a reason to get up…

7. MOVE ON

A song about getting caught up in a cycle of negative thoughts or actions, personal and political.

We acknowledge the incredible history of the First Nations People of our country, our privilege in traveling and living on country cared for by the traditional owners for thousands of years. We desire to learn, to grow and heal so we can walk together into the future.

9. TAKE THE TIME

OoA’s country song! (there’s always debate about that when we play it live) The story of a lonely troubadour, trying to find someone to love….

10. LONG TIME COMING

A Blues song, but a song of hope, that we all, as a community, take care of one another in the changes coming due to climate change, poverty and war.

11. BREATHE

A grounding song, a gentle reminder that in times of inner turmoil and worries about the world that sometimes all we really need to to do is breathe.

LYRICS

ONE MORE CHANCE W.Hargreaves/ T.Fullerton

HER LOVE’S GOT A NASTY STREAK, COMES OUT WHEN HE DRINKS THAT GIN
WAKES HER UP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT JUST TO MESS WITH THE STATE SHE’S IN
SAYS HE’S GOT SOME BONE TO PICK OVER SOMETHING THAT SHE ONCE SAID SOME LITTLE OLD SEED OF DOUBT HAS GROWN TO FILL UP HIS HEAD
HE’LL BE SORRY IN THE MORNING, BUT THEY’VE BEEN THROUGH THIS BEFORE
IF SHE MAKES IT THROUGH THE NIGHT, SHE’S GONNA LEAVE ON THE 9:04

OR GIVE HIM ONE MORE CHANCE

HIS LOVE’S GOT A DANCER’S SOUL COMES OUT WHEN SHE FEELS THAT BEAT SHE KEEPS ON MOVING THROUGH THE RAIN OR SNOW OR HEAT
GOT TO GET TO THAT OTHER PLACE, THE ONE THAT FREES HER FROM HER MIND HER BODY CARRIES WHAT HER HEART CAN’T LEAVE BEHIND

SHE’LL STILL BE DANCING WHILE THE STARS ARE IN THE SKY SHE’S GOT NO NEED FOR SLEEP, THAT’S WHERE THE DEMONS LIE

JUST HAVE THAT ONE MORE DANCE ONE MORE DANCE

HER LOVE’S GOT A NASTY STREAK, COMES OUT WHEN HE DRINKS THAT GIN
WAKES HER UP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT JUST TO MESS WITH THE STATE SHE’S IN
SAYS HE’S GOT SOME BONE TO PICK OVER SOMETHING THAT SHE ONCE SAID SOME LITTLE OLD SEED OF DOUBT HAS GROWN TO FILL UP HIS HEAD
HE’LL REGRET IT IN THE MORNING, THEN DO IT ALL AGAIN
IF SHE MAKES IT THROUGH THE NIGHT, SHE’S GONNA LEAVE ON THE FIRST DAMN TRAIN

COULD BE HER ONE LAST CHANCE ONE LAST CHANCE

WE ALL BELONG T.Fullerton / W.Hargreaves

NEVER GOING BACK TO A PLACE WHERE I FEEL STRUNG OUT, LOCKED IN TO A SYSTEM THAT I KNOW IS JUST NOT RIGHT

WHEN IT FEELS SO GOOD TO BE FREE FROM THE CLAWS OF THE CITY TURNS OUT THAT DREAM THAT THEY SOLD US WAS ALL BASED ON A PACK OF LIES

THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS A TRICKLE DOWN ECONOMY WHEN THE RICH HOLD ON TO WHAT THEY’VE GOT, KEEP TAKING IT ALL FOR GRANTED GONNA TAKE, GONNA TAKE THE LOT

A SEA OF GREY ROOFS CONFRONT ME WHEN I’M DRIVING INTO THE CITY AIN’T SHAME OR ENVY JUST A HEAD FULL OF PITY

IF THAT’S WHAT YOU’VE GOT TO DO THEN YOU BETTER GET RIGHT ON TO IT SO MANY DIFFERENT WAYS THAT WE ALL CAN DO IT LISTEN TO HER NOW

WHEN ARE WE GOING TO REALISE THAT WE ALL, THAT WE ALL BELONG

NEVER GOING BACK TO A PLACE WHERE I FEEL STRUNG OUT LOCKED IN TO A SYSTEM THAT I KNOW IS JUST NOT RIGHT

HOW CAN WE LEAVE OUR BROTHERS AND OUR SISTERS NO PLACE TO CALL THEIR HOME WHEN ARE WE GOING TO REALISE THAT WE ALL, THAT WE ALL BELONG

WHEN ARE WE GOING TO REALISE THAT WE ALL, THAT WE ALL BELONG

RED DIRT, SALT BUSH AND DAISIES. T.Fullerton / W.Hargreaves

IT WAS JUST ANOTHER ROADSIDE REST STOP A PLACE TO MAKE HER HOME FOR THE NIGHT. IN THE RED DIRT, SALT BUSH AND DAISIES

SHE STRETCHED HER LEGS, A LITTLE MORE FRAIL NOW AND TOOK IN THE ENDLESS EXPANSE. THE BLUE SKIES AND DESERT HORIZON

THEN LEAVING HER SIDE DOOR WIDE OPEN CURTAINS SWAYING IN THE COOL AUTUMN BREEZE SHE LAY DOWN TO WATCH THE SKY TURN A GOLDEN ROSE GLOW. HOW COULD SHE KNOW THAT THIS WOULD BE HER VERY LAST SUNSET FOR AS SHE LAY THERE HER SPIRIT SLIPPED AWAY FROM HER BODY

AND TOOK FLIGHT…..

HER LITTLE BUS STOOD STILL FOR THREE DAYS THERE WAS TOLD BEFORE THEY TOWED IT AWAY. AND TO THE MORGUE TOOK HER BODY WORN AND GREY

HER FEET LEFT THEIR IMPRINT SO BRIEFLY OUT THERE ON THAT DUSTY OLD PLAIN IN THE RED DIRT, SALT BUSH AND DAISIES

OUT IN THE RED DIRT, SALT BUSH AND DAISIES OUT IN THE RED DIRT, SALT BUSH AND DAISIES

HANUSH’S WATERHOLE W.Hargreaves / T.Fullerton

IT WAS A HAZY DAY UPON THE CAPE AS WE MADE OUR WAY ALONG TRACKS THROUGH ANT CITIES AND THEIR CATHEDRALS OF SUNBAKED CLAY

REMNANTS OF THE WET TIME SOAKS WE SEE ARE DRIED AND STRETCHED AND CRACKED, SCALE-LIKE SKINS OF MUD

ANCIENT FRONDS OF SILVER TOP THE SPIRALLED SILVER TRUNKS SPRUNG FROM THIS ANCIENT SOIL INTO A SHINING BLUE SKY

WE FOUND HANUSH’S WATERHOLE A PORTAL STRAIGHT BACK IN TIME HANUSH’S WATERHOLE, A PORTAL STRAIGHT BACK IN TIME

THE WEATHERED ROCK FORMATIONS TELL THE TALES OF YEARS GONE BY, ONE HUNDRED MILLION STORMS

AND SOULS OF THOSE WHO’VE STOOD UPON THE BANKS UNDER THE SHADE OF WIZENED TREES AND BLAZING SUN

AS THEY GAZED INTO THE RIVER DEEP AND OLD WITH EYES WIDE OPEN AND THEIR SENSES PRIMED FOR DANGER LURKS BENEATH THAT SHIMMERING SURFACE ALL AGLOW AND TIME STANDS STILL AND STILL IT’S LONG AGO

HANUSH’S WATERHOLE, A PORTAL STRAIGHT BACK IN TIME HANUSH’S WATERHOLE, A PORTAL STRAIGHT BACK IN TIME

SPIRIT TIME

AS WE REMINISCE ON DAYS WE SPENT THERE IN SUSPENSE AND FELT THE ABSENCE OF THE TICKING HANDS OF TIME

WE WONDER WHO WAS THIS HANUSH AND HOW IT WAS HE CAME TO LEAVE HIS NAME UPON THIS PLACE, THIS SACRED, ANCIENT LAND

RINYIRRU COUNTRY

HANUSH’S WATERHOLE, A PORTAL STRAIGHT BACK IN TIME HANUSH’S WATERHOLE, A PORTAL STRAIGHT BACK IN TIME HANUSH’S WATERHOLE, A PORTAL STRAIGHT BACK IN TIME

THERE’S ALWAYS SOMETHING SAD GOING ON SO MUCH SUFFERING, SO MANY PEOPLE WRONGED IN THIS WORLD IT CAN BE HARD TO SEE SOME LIGHT I’M SO GRATEFUL I’VE GOT YOU BY MY SIDE I’VE GOT YOU BY MY SIDE

IT’S BEEN A LONG TIME COMING IT’S BEEN A LONG TIME COMING IT’S BEEN A LONG TIME COMING IT’S BEEN A LONG TIME COMING IT’S BEEN A LONG TIME COMING BUT WINDS OF CHANGE MUST BLOW ON IT’S BEEN A LONG TIME COMING SO TAKE YOUR BROTHER BY THE HAND AND LET’S ALL WALK EACH OTHER HOME

BREATHE T.Fullerton / W.Hargreaves

I’M OK WHEN YOU’RE OK EVEN IF THE WORLD AROUND US IS FALLING APART ALL WE NEED TO DO IS BREATHE IN AND WATCH THE SUN RISE

I’M OK AND YOU’RE OK EVEN IF THE WORLDS WITHIN US KEEP FALLING APART ALL WE REALLY NEED TO DO IS BREATHE OUT AND WATCH THE SUN GO DOWN

I’M OK WHEN YOU’RE OK EVEN IF THE WORLD AROUND US IS FALLING APART ALL WE NEED TO DO IS BREATHE IN AND WATCH THE SUN RISE
